Secret Location North of Puerto Vallarta Is Wonderful Bucerias
It is hard to not fall in love with Mexico. Delicious food, beautiful beaches, fascinating customs and amiable people comprise the culture in this singularly unique country. The one drawback may be the throngs of people in the major resort centers. However, just 15 minutes from the resort hub of Puerto Vallarta is the community of Bucerias – an old fishing town that these days could be thought of Puerto Vallarta light.
Like any major tourist city, Puerto Vallarta has dozens of nightclubs and party bars to appease the rowdy set. The beaches are often pretty crowded, and hometown restaurants cater more to American and European preferences rather than the genuine Mexican fare. However, not all people like the din of the big city, and large crowds can often ruin what otherwise could be an enjoyable event. Just a fifteen minute drive north though, is Bucerias – which offers everything Puerto Vallarta does but at a slower pace and with a friendlier attitude.
Bucerias, like most western coast communities, was a fishing town at its beginning in the early twentieth century. The word Bucerias translates to “divers” in Spanish; harkening back to the town’s origins when many of the founders ferreted out a living diving into the waters of Banderas Bay for oysters. Bucerias is renowned for its shellfish and almost all of the little street and sidewalk vendors offer fresh seafood tacos. Fishing is still a driving force of the local economy as there are many guided fishing operations doing business in town. Huge sailfish and tuna are routinely caught in the bay.
Bucerias still sports the cobblestone roads and street vendors of conventional Mexican villages. However, this town of over 20,000 individuals melds totally contemporary comforts with old customs and the traditionally casual Mexican outlook. Bucerias has a swanky, all-inclusive jumbo resort that is as fine as any in Puerto Vallarta, and there are even a few quality theaters that do a fine job of presenting international plays . Nightclubs in Bucerias are also just as fun as those in the big cities, but they carry a more laid-back outlook and far smaller crowds to contend with.
In addition to the posh resorts and classy restaurants, Bucerias has a cultured aspect that is often unseen. Artists seem to flock to Bucerias and the community hosts a big weekly art carnival. Many galleries tout their wares at the market – which supports nascent Mexican artists who may not otherwise have the opportunity.
